HISTORY
We have been working for this hospital since 1970 as an architect’s firm. In 1980 a new hospital was completed for a budget that was approx. €2.5 million under the amount that qualified for subsidy. At the end of the 80’s we realised an adjacent rest home with 90 beds. A small expansion was realised at the end of the 90’s and a master plan for the new construction of the outpatients’ clinic and medical technical services was made. In 2005 a request for subsidy was submitted.
In expectation of this master plan a modular temporary building provided a solution for some of the most urgent functions in 2006. It offers room for a cafeteria, a pharmacy, an endoscopy department and an outpatients’ clinic.
URBAN DEVELOPMENT
The expansion of the St Andries hospital required a special urban planning intervention, with the guidance of the municipal and regional institutions concerned. The parcel’s surface is sufficient to solve the existing parking problem, but the specific structure does not allow for any control over the use of the parking spaces. Thus, many parking spaces are taken by vehicles that do not belong to any of the visitors or to the hospital personnel.
The expansion has more potential at architectural and spatial level if part of the main road can be used.
Both issues have led to the proposal to take over part of the public space (Krommewalstraat). This traffic intervention will be beneficial for the hospital as well as for the city. Our introductory dossier was sufficient to convince the municipal authorities.
We are working on the MOBER (mobility analysis) to adapt the regional traffic plan and the junction with the regional road. These discussions are now in a final phase.
LLOX was involved in all the meetings and created the most important urban development and the technical traffic plans.
The new build will have two parking levels. On the ground floor the emergency department, the reception and the pharmacy will be located. The reception zone stretches into the heart of the hospital, where everything is within reach.
The higher ground level is an ambulant layer with polyclinics. The first floor is an extension of the OR.
The flexible structure and the façade system will allow for later adaptations of the plan grid. A patio and an enormous glass entrance hall with a fountain ensure that large amounts of light and air are brought into the building.
