HISTORY

Nico Luyten’s design was chosen from a selection of thirty projects from 4th year architecture students at the HAIR in Antwerp.
The Oud Gasthuis in Gooreind is of great sentimental value to the local inhabitants, something which the design takes into account. On the street side the building is almost completely intact. All the necessary interventions were implemented at the back of the building.

PROGRAMME

The 24 studios are located on two levels. They are actually duplex apartments, in which the sleeping area is situated above the living area. As a result, the high-ceilinged spaces are used to a maximum extent, as are the renovated windows of the facade.
A gangway was built against the back of the building to connect the two existing staircases in the corners of the building with the central hall and staircase as well as the flats themselves.
The interventions at the back of the building were so radical that this part was handled in a completely different way than the existing, renovated façade. That is also the reason why it was plastered.
Every apartment is equipped and suited for couples without children or singles. Each studio has its own storage space in the cellar. Some flats have an additional bedroom.
